String inverters

The most common and cost-effective option. Panels are wired in series strings, all feeding one central inverter. Hybrid inverters

A hybrid inverter manages solar panels and a battery bank together, with a single device. If you are planning to add a battery now or within a few years, starting with a hybrid inverter avoids the cost of a second device later. Most modern hybrid inverters also provide backup capability during a grid outage, depending on how the system is wired.

Microinverters and power optimisers

Microinverters sit on each individual panel and convert DC to AC at the panel. Power optimisers are a hybrid approach: a DC optimiser at each panel feeds a central string inverter. Both approaches eliminate the shading problem because each panel operates independently. They suit complex rooflines with multiple orientations, or roofs with unavoidable shade. The per-panel hardware adds cost, but can significantly increase yield on problem roofs.
