A safety switch, or RCD, watches the current flowing through a circuit. If electricity leaks to earth, through a damaged cable or through a person, it cuts power in milliseconds. That speed is the difference between a fright and a fatality.

Safety switch vs circuit breaker
They look similar in the switchboard but do different jobs. A circuit breaker protects the wiring from overload and short circuits. A safety switch protects people from electric shock. Modern boards combine both in a single device called an RCBO.

Queensland law requires safety switches on power circuits in homes built or sold since the early 1990s, and current wiring rules extend protection to virtually all final subcircuits, including lights and air conditioning, whenever new work is done.
How to test yours
Every safety switch has a test button marked T. Press it and the switch should trip instantly. Reset it and you are done. Do this every three months. If a switch does not trip when tested, call an electrician straight away.
