Switchboard Upgrades on the Gold Coast
Protect your home. Handle today's electrical loads.
An outdated switchboard is one of the most common electrical safety risks in older Gold Coast homes. Ceramic fuses and older circuit breakers provide minimal protection compared to modern safety switches. FitElec upgrades switchboards to current standards, fitting safety switches (RCDs) across all circuits and adding capacity for today's electrical loads including solar, battery, EV chargers and multiple air conditioners.
What we offer
- Safety switch installation — RCD (residual current device) safety switches installed on all circuits to provide life-saving protection against electric shock and reduce fire risk.
- Full switchboard replacement — Complete replacement of old ceramic fuse boards with a modern switchboard, properly rated for your home's current and future electrical load.
- Circuit additions — New dedicated circuits added for air conditioning, solar inverters, EV chargers, hot water systems or workshop equipment.
- Switchboard expansion — Adding capacity to an existing board that is running out of space or nearing its rated load, without replacing the whole assembly where not necessary.
- Metering upgrades — Smart meter and time-of-use metering upgrades co-ordinated with Energex for solar, battery or EV charging setups.
- Safety inspections — Switchboard condition inspection with a written report on the current state, safety risks and recommended actions.
Why choose FitElec
- Mandatory safety switch compliance — Queensland law requires safety switches on all circuits in new installations. An upgrade brings your home into compliance and keeps your family safer.
- Capacity for modern loads — Solar, battery storage, EV chargers and multiple air conditioners all draw significant power. We size your board for current and planned future loads.
- Licensed electrician — Switchboard work must be carried out by a licensed electrician. All FitElec work is performed under Licence #1505994 with a Certificate of Compliance issued.
- Honest assessment — We tell you what genuinely needs replacing and what can wait, rather than quoting a full upgrade when a partial fix is the right answer.
- Fast turnaround — Most residential switchboard upgrades are completed in a single day. We minimise the time your power is off and restore supply before we leave.
How it works
- On-site inspection: We inspect your current switchboard, assess the condition and load, and identify any safety concerns before quoting.
- Written quote: You receive a clear quote detailing exactly what will be replaced, what circuits will be added and any Energex paperwork required.
- Upgrade completed: We complete the upgrade, test every circuit and confirm all safety switches are operating correctly.
- Certificate of Compliance: We issue the electrical safety certificate and advise on any follow-up actions such as Energex metering changes.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?
- If you have ceramic fuses (the ones you replace with fuse wire), no RCD safety switches, or your board trips frequently, it is due for attention. Call us for a free on-site assessment.
- Can you add a safety switch without replacing the whole board?
- Sometimes yes. We assess the existing board first. In many older boards, adding a safety switch requires replacing the board because there is nowhere to fit the device safely.
- Does upgrading my switchboard affect my power supply?
- Your power will be off while we work on the board. For a full replacement this is typically three to five hours. We co-ordinate with you to minimise disruption.
- Do I need Energex involved?
- Not always. For a simple safety switch upgrade within your existing board, no Energex involvement is needed. For metering changes or service upgrades, we manage the Energex application for you.
- Is a switchboard upgrade required before installing solar?
- Sometimes. If your existing board doesn't have capacity for the solar inverter circuit or lacks safety switches, we will include a board upgrade in the solar quote.
